Cost of ICOCA Card:

An ICOCA IC Card costs 2,000 Yen, with a 500 Yen deposit, which is refundable upon the return of the card to a JR station.  The remaining 1,500 Yen can be used to pay for transportation and other purchases made using the card. Note that you will have to load your card from time to time and the maximum top off is 20,000 Yen.

Where to buy one:

You can buy one at ticket machines located at train stations as well as at convenience stores and other retail outlets.

Whenever I want to travel without too much cash, I make sure that I load my ICOCA card so that I can streamline my purchases at stores as well as commute without waiting in line to buy a train ticket.  You will definitely find this card to be very useful for your daily life in Japan.

    • No registration is required for immediate use.
  2. Children’s ICOCA: 


    • In-person registration is specifically required for children.
    • Parents may acquire a card for their child by presenting official identification.
  3. SMART ICOCA:


    • A credit card-linked option eliminates the need for cash top-ups.
    • Restricted to the registered individual.

ICOCA Usage

  • Simply tap your card at ticket gates or upon boarding buses, bypassing the need to queue or calculate fares.
  • Note: ICOCA cannot be used for the Shinkansen.

Airport Access
